About Bryanston School

Bryanston School

At Bryanston School, their aim is to develop well-balanced 18-year-olds, ready to go out into the wider world, to lead happy and fulfilling lives and to contribute, positively and generously.

Bryanston School provides every pupil with personal attention and support. This tailored approach means that pupils benefit from extensive one-to-one time with their tutor and also with subject teachers each week, providing the academic and pastoral encouragement they need to achieve their full potential as an individual.

Bryanston School is set in 400 acres of beautiful Dorset countryside and offers a range of facilities, including modern boarding houses, purpose-built centres for science and mathematics, art, drama, music and sports: all of which means pupils can explore a range of disciplines to discover their personal strengths.

Boarding at Bryanston School

Alongside an excellent education in the classroom, boarding at Bryanston School affords extra time and space to explore an exceptional range of activities on campus, enabling every pupil to discover and develop their individual range of talents and to become specialists in their areas of strength.

Together with a tutorial system, the pastoral support and structure of Bryanston School ensure that housemasters and housemistresses (known as ‘hsms’ at Bryanston) and tutors share responsibility for each child with you, their parents, all communicating and co-operating together to make sure the pupils are happy and achieving their best.

Co-Curricular Programmes

All D (year 9) pupils have a weekly individual music lesson, whether or not they have studied a musical instrument before. There is a strong emphasis on participation and there are many opportunities for pupils to perform, covering all types of music and all levels of ability, from informal lunchtime concerts to the annual London Concert.

The Drama Department is similarly lively. Anyone with talent and commitment can get involved, whether in the Junior Drama Society, the large-scale production each autumn term, House Drama, or one of the many other performances throughout the year. And for those who prefer to get involved back stage, they can always join the stage crew and learn about the mechanics behind the performances.

The Art Department at Bryanston is a unique and exciting place where pupils learn to develop an independent approach from an early age. Pupils are taught a solid grounding in skills such as observation and drawing in its broadest sense and encouraged to explore and develop their own ideas and style.

The Design and Technology Department is filled with energy and creativity and the sheer variety of work produced by pupils is astounding, from stained-glass windows to bespoke modern furniture and guitars.

There is a wide range of sports on offer, from rugby, hockey, rowing and netball to kayaking, fives and lacrosse, and pupils are encouraged to try new activities, either through the games programme or ECAs. Our underlying aim is to ensure all pupils develop an affectionate connection with sport and consider an active, healthy lifestyle to be an integral part of later life. In addition, Bryanston is committed to providing world-class support for its aspiring young athletes through its Performance Sport Programme (PSP). PSP, let by Head of Performance Sport, Alex Chapman, provides a structured framework throughout a pupil’s time at Bryanston, starting with generic skills and techniques and moving to a bespoke sport-specific programme for each individual involved.

In addition, Bryanston also offers over 100 different extra-curricular activities from beekeeping and code breaking to Model United Nations and dance.

All pupils are involved in Pioneering at some point in their time at Bryanston. Pioneering offers pupils opportunities to get involved in a wide range of activities around the school and in the local community. Through Pioneering pupils are able to offer something back to their community and the skills they learn in the process can be invaluable when they leave Bryanston. Bryanston’s Outdoor Education department is thriving and offers Duke of Edinburgh Bronze and Gold Awards, adventure training for all D (yr 9) and C (yr 10) pupils, as well as regular climbing trips (in addition to the use of the school’s own climbing tower and bouldering wall).

There are a number of fundraising activities throughout the year, including a pupil-run charities day in aid of a charity chosen by the Heads of School and the annual Nepal Charities Fair, which raises money for charities in Nepal with which the school has close contacts.
