Mayfield School

About Mayfield School

Mayfield School offers amazing opportunities, helping girls to challenge stereotypical views of what they can and should achieve. Mathematics and the sciences are among the most popular and successful subjects at both GCSE and A-Level, and equally successful are subjects as diverse as Geography and Music. The School also excel in areas traditionally considered to be ‘creative’: Mayfield produces world-renowned ceramicists, has a dynamic Drama department and an enviable sporting tradition. The key to success is to encourage and nurture creativity in everything that they do, inside and outside the classroom. This leads to girls choosing an eclectic range of option choices: Chemistry and Ceramics, or Physics and History of Art are not unusual A level/Pre-U combinations.  Most go on to Russell Group, Oxbridge or, increasingly, American and overseas universities, to study all manner of subjects from Architecture to Zoology, with a regular stream of Engineers, Medics and Vets, Lawyers and Economists.

At Mayfield, they accept every girl for who she is and instil in her the confidence to find her strengths – wherever they may lie – and build on them.  Staff who are experts in their field and passionate about their subjects help provide the challenge, support and inspiration each girl needs to flourish. A Mayfield girl is challenged to set herself demanding targets and helped to find strategies to achieve them. They expect girls to think independently, to question their own and other people’s ideas, and to learn to make informed decisions.

Mayfield School is a vibrant community. A wide-ranging extra-curricular provision complements learning in the classroom and girls are encouraged to try new activities. The ‘Actions not Words’ Programme provides opportunities to be involved in service both in the local community and further afield, ensuring that faith in action continues to be an important of Mayfield life. The School want actions to be inspired by a sense of justice and integrity, sustained by faith and respect for others.

In joining Mayfield you will be welcomed into a community which dates back to 1872, when Cornelia Connelly and her Society of the Holy Child Jesus opened the School, and which reaches as far afield as sister schools in Africa, America and Europe. Traditionally they have attracted pupils from around the world, as well as locally. Such a cosmopolitan ethos helps the girls to understand and appreciate different cultures and perspectives, and to value diversity. Friendships forged here continue not only through school, but into the future, and the School are proud to welcome successive generations back to Mayfield.

Boarding at Mayfield School

Whether full or flexi, boarding is integral to the educational opportunity that the School provides. House life is rooted in the values of the School – care and respect for one another, charity and forgiveness. The heart of each House lies in the joy and delight the girls derive from each other’s company. Friendships are formed here which last long after the girls have left Mayfield. The fullness of the boarding experience fosters their development into caring, communicative and engaged young women who, at every turn, enrich the world they enter.

Co-Curricular Programmes

While academic study and the pursuit of excellent examination results are important, the benefits which stem from a broad and balanced education are immeasurable.  Our programme of extra-curricular activities is wide and varied.

There are three activity periods each day, one after lunch and two between the end of lessons and the end of school.  This gives all girls the opportunity to pursue a range of interests and enthusiasms, including sport, the arts and academic enrichment.

At the beginning of each academic year we hold an Activities Fair.  Every activity has a stall where girls can find out more about what they will be doing and what is expected.   They sign up via the school website and their chosen activities are added to their timetable.  Tutors have an overview of each of their tutee’s programme’s and will encourage and guide each girl to explore her potential.

On Saturday mornings we have a programme of workshops for boarders.  This term these include sport, ceramics, dance, drama, textiles and cookery.  Each workshop runs for a term.

On Saturday afternoons girls may choose to go on a cultural trip, to attend an activity run by members of the teaching staff, including Sushi Making, Spanish conversation, Chess, Crafts, Geocaching or Film Studies, or take part in sport.

One of the qualities we wish to develop in our girls is commitment and extra-curricular activities are part of this.  Once girls have signed up to an activity it is expected that they will continue with it for a full term.
