About Stover School

Stover School

Stover School is a unique and very special place; a school that delivers cutting edge education while retaining a healthy focus on traditional Christian morals, values and manners. Happy children are at the very centre of the school ethos, reflecting a robust system of pastoral care. Children who feel safe, valued, respected and who trust those around them are free to focus on learning to their maximum potential. The stunning rural setting allows children to enjoy being children and is integral to enhancing this ethos.

In the co-educational, non-selective environment Stover School provides the best models of “real life”, allowing the pupils to build the interpersonal skills, empathy, independence and fortitude required to be successful in the wider world. At Stover school, the family atmosphere ensures that every child is known and understood by the staff and their fellow pupils, as an individual who has something to offer the school community and world at large. This individual approach is reflected in an absolute focus on adding value to the academic potential of each student, in an effort to maximise their individual educational and examination outputs, regardless of their ability. The school firmly believes that success breeds success and an extensive additional curriculum and activities programme provides opportunities for all of our children to explore a range of interests and enjoy positive outcomes, leading to a burgeoning self-confidence that then reaps rewards and enhances progress in all areas of the academic and additional curriculum. Stover School takes full advantage of our single campus for pupils from 3 to 18 years of age.

The Prep and Senior stages are fully integrated with staff working across both phases. The school also provide a number of structured roles and responsibilities which allow the older pupils to work with the younger ages. This enhances the Stover family, gives the older pupils the responsibility they need to grow and enables the younger pupils to aspire to these role models. The latest Inspection team firmly endorsed this, giving us a set of judgements that no other independent school in the area can rival.

Stover School is embedding a Research-Based Learning Curriculum across the entire school and has created a covered court to facilitate the launch of the Stover Tennis Academy and continue to develop the “bring your own” ICT infrastructure that best model ICT usage in the work-place. The school continue to enhance best use of the 64-acre site by developing community partnerships which have facilitated the launch of the Stover Clay Club, rifle range, beehives and bushcraft clubs. This drive to provide the best education for all children has seen the pupil roll rise and examination results improve in a very healthy fashion over the last three years.

Co-Curricular Programmes

The activities programme is an important part of the school day and a variety of activities are offered to pupils throughout the school. Activities and Supported Study take place every day from Monday to Friday from 12noon until 12.45pm (or 1pm in some instances). Members of staff offer two activities per week per year with a number of outside providers enriching the offering. The Head of Key Stage 3 coordinates the activities programme, and it is compulsory for pupils in Years 7 to 11 to participate in activities, or supported study at this time. Pupils sign up for activities at the start of the Autumn Term and at the ends of the Autumn and Spring Terms. Pupils will be able to choose between activities suitable for their age group and their Form Tutor will monitor their choices to ensure each pupil achieves a good balance. Stover School operates an extensive extra-curricular programme of outdoor pursuits. The Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme at Bronze, Silver and Gold levels and activity weekends enable pupils to experience activities such as caving, abseiling and trekking. The ability to take on challenges, work as part of a team and to take responsibility are key objectives of this aspect of education at Stover. One of the main events is the Ten Tors competition (when up to 45 miles are walked over Dartmoor in two days), for which pupils prepare and train for many months. Activities also include LAMDA Drama classes, HIGH5 Sports and Activities and even educational trips abroad.
