King Edward’s Witley

About King Edward’s Witley

Pupils thrive at King Edward’s. We encourage them to be the best versions of themselves because individual achievement and personal growth count for more than league tables. Our culture of thinking and enquiry runs deep. Here, a child’s natural curiosity prompts exploration of ideas without fear of failure. We set them up for a life of discovery. Relationships come first at King Edward’s and diversity has been a strength ever since our foundation in 1553. On our leafy, 100-acre site amid the Surrey Hills we have space for all the sport, drama, music, hobbies, and intellectual pursuits a young mind can take.  Pupils leave as independent free-thinkers – agile, motivated and self-disciplined.

Boarding at King Edward’s School, Witley

King Edward’s is a thriving community with four senior boys and two senior girls houses for day, weekly and flexi boarders.  Lower school pupils in Years 7 and 8 reside in Queen Mary House, an impressive family-oriented building steeped in history.  Each House has a pastoral team consisting of a House parent and assistant House parent, Matron and an academic tutor. Additionally, there is a 24-hour Medical Centre and an on-site chaplain. Each House has its own pupil team of House Prefects and Head of House who are another body of people to listen, support and represent the pupil voice in daily school life. The core focus of each pastoral team is pupil welfare, whatever their need may be. Every House parent’s aim is to make their House a home during term time and to ensure that opportunities are provided for all our pupils to thrive.

Hobbies and activities

On our leafy, 100-acre site amid the Surrey Hills we have space for all the sport, drama, music, hobbies, and intellectual pursuits a young mind can take. King Edward’s is a wonderfully safe place for youthful adventure and curiosity.

The School creates a foundation for life both now and for the future. Our timeless education reaches far beyond the exciting and challenging academic curriculum and the broad range of opportunities in all areas of school life – sporting, artistic, social and cultural.

Pupils leave as independent free-thinkers – agile, motivated, and self-disciplined. The creative, entrepreneurial thinking they develop here gives the next generation of inventors, designers and problem-solvers the ability to grasp life with both hands.

Sport

Our ethos ensures there is ample choice for boys and girls to enjoy a wide variety of sports.  Our sports programme is built on the latest research with activities that blend breadth with specific development, hence offering a vast array of Physical Education programmes.

Weekly sports matches – Saturdays and mid-week, and in recent years the School is proud to have achieved regional and national success in football, tennis, basketball, table tennis, fencing, climbing and athletics.  If a pupil asks to participate in a particular sport, we will find an opportunity for them to do so. If a girl or boy has an aptitude for a sport, we support them in obtaining specialist and expert coaching, join programmes and local clubs to develop their skills and compete. We help plan the pursuit of coaching qualifications for our pupils.

Music

Music flourishes inside and outside the classroom with some twenty choirs, orchestras and specialist instrumental ensembles from chamber music to rock bands. A carefully structured programme enables pupils of all abilities and aspirations to perform from informal showcase concerts and workshops to masterclasses and large-scale concerts. Annual instrumental and vocal competitions are held for soloists and ensembles. Annual House Music competitions,’ Battle of the Bands’ and ‘Musician of the Year’ all bring the school community together. The Music and Drama Departments regularly collaborate in school productions and, thanks to our strong link to the City of London, pupils often perform at events in the City.

We aim to inspire a love of independent learning, a wealth of lasting friendships, Christian values and hopeful vision. King Edward’s is an extraordinary, distinctive, forward-thinking and global minded community. It is a wonderful place to be.
